Crafting a Sled

When we first moved into this house and rummaged through the shed out back, I saw this beat up, old sled and got really excited! Now I must confess, I have never been sledding nor do I know anything about sleds. After all, we don't sled down here in these parts, this is due entirely to the lack of snow and hills for that matter. Nevertheless, when I saw it, I thought it would make a great decoration piece! So since then, I have been waiting to get my hands on it and give it a coat of red paint add some pine sprigs and a great big bow, that's easy enough.  I immediately bought the sand paper to get started.

Fast forward two and a half years...last week, I had my son take it out of the shed. And my husband, the darling, acquiesced to my request, and took me to the Large Hardware Warehouse and bought me the red paint, water based latex for easy clean up (he knows me so well!) He also got me the tack cloth to clean up the sand papering even though I already had some cheesecloth "that's for another craft" I said. Some throw away brushes, that can clean up for recycling, a left over can of primer, blue tape, and plumber's strap  (that metal thing that goes around and you secure it with a nail or screw.)

So here it is, the sled. From the looks of it, I think this moveable part steers, it supposed to really glide on some cold region type of surface.  I suppose that I could consider the Antique Treasure Show or something but I really just want to get my hands on it. I have always loved the thought of working with wood but lack the training. There's something so NATURAL about working with wood. It's so purposeful: house, toys, storage, furniture, sleds and one horse open sleighs, la, la, la, la, la.

Something tells me this won't be as easy as I thought... stay tuned.

Christmas Once a Month Project #5

First, I must beg your pardon as I overlooked the date (15th) for the Christmas Once a Month posts as outlined  here  at Julie's blog. I don't know now if I'm ahead or behind?    In any case, I do hope this project will make up for my oversight. I have had this pattern on my mind since I first worked with half square triangles on this project .  I am happy to say this is one of my own inventions, as I did not use any pattern. Yay! I started with a clear idea and made the rest up as I went along! Some people collect scraps for a giant scrappy quilt, I prefer more immediate gratification by making something more compact in a fraction of the time! Truthfully, finishing something (like a quilt) gives me great satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment I don't get doing other things;  I'm addicted! One perk was that I did it entirely with leftovers: Squares, 5 inch charms and smaller 2 1/2 inch squares, various strips...
