Simply Retro Update: "Adorn"

Made entirely of scrappy strips.  Because the Pebble quilting was so compact and I only "outline" quilted the star, it did get a "bubbling" type of effect when lying flat. Can you tell? Who cares though? The pebble quilting looks so great! So there you have it! The finished "Adorn" pattern from  Simply Retro by Camille Roskelley.

Simply Retro Update: "Playground"

This post is to show you the completed baby quilt from the "Playground" pattern from the same book. It's done in Baby Big Top Circus fabric by Timeless Treasures. Not much a fan of circuses per se, but they sure look great as illustrations and fabric! This pattern is one of the projects in the book Simply Retro by Camille Roskelley.  Jana is hosting a quilt along on her blog . I wanted to give you an update on how lovely this quilt came out. At least I was happy with the result. I just quilted loops, that's "circus-y" isn't it?  large loops on the blocks and small loopier loops on the sashing and borders. The backing has moons and stars, I used this for my son's room 14 years ago! Let's just say I've come such a looooong way!! Can you guess my favorite part?  Solid binding in various colors, it was the perfect complement. And it was very convenient to have this jelly roll handy!...

Simply Retro Quilt Along

Sweet Life.  That's the name of this super easy and fun pattern from Camille Roskelley' s book Simply Retro . It's the next project on the Quilt Along hosted by Jana, hop on over to her blog and see what other people have made. We are almost done with the book!! I opted out of making a full quilt since I already have done one baby quilt and I am working on another baby quilt and one full sized quilt, both from this book.  So I decided to make a pillow using these Kate Spain Fat Quarters I got this summer.   And I used some "word" fabric full of Christmas cheer, I already had for the back. Wondering what that flap is for?  It's a zipper cover.  I used to be a Zippophobe (to use the word from The Patchsmith, Amanda .) It means "someone who has fear or anxiety at the thought of inserting, installing, attaching or assembling a zipper into any type of sewing project ." So yep! I finally faced my...

Simply Retro Quilt Along

It's that time again for another project from Camille Roskelley's book Simply Retro, this Quilt Along is being hosted by Jana , check out the other posts on her blog.       Do you have tons of strips and scraps from other quilts and projects? Don't tell me you threw them out?!?!  This project is perfect for such left overs. The best part is there is not much "aligning" to worry about, or any mismatched seams likely to be noticed. That's why it's just "my kind" of project!   It's called "Adorn" and it's a six point star.      (photo by Jana)   During this project I tried out three new tools and techniques!    First, I used spray basting. Got this bottle 50% off at Joann (one of those "no minimum" low rate shipping offers too) I sprayed the backing fabric and smoothed on the batting. DON"T SPRAY YOUR TOP!!       Second, I got to try out my 60 degree Tria...

Simply Retro Quilt Along

The most desirable and "have to do" pattern in the Simply Retro Book by Camille Roskelley has to be  "Dwell" the quilt of houses.        Picture by Jana!   Not only does she use the softest palette, but the are also fun and easy to make. In no time I practically had a neighborhood!! Okay maybe it was just a street block but you know what I mean.   I am quilting along with Jana following all the projects in the book and I can barely keep up (can you tell I'm panting?)       While I am really committed to doing each project and at minimum one block to start, I am also trying my best to use scraps for the "test run."     As you can see in my eagerness to get this together I flipped the pieces so the first house is not quite right.   Everything went along swimmingly while I pieced.   But when I started to quilt, that's another story. I always use the teal thread when I u...

Simply Retro Quilt Along

Whew! I thought I'd never get this done but I enjoyed it so much. A great motivator to finish is using some fun fabric. It provided great stress relief, once I got started I could not stop! But I've only finished the top, quilting is yet to be done.      This pattern is called "Playground" in Camille Roskelley's Simply Retro book (you can get it here  or at her store Thimble Blossoms .)  I'm quilting along through this book with Jana .       Here are two ways to change how the block looks.         Mix up the colors and patterns.     Or leave them more uniform, Both work!     I used Baby Big Top Circus Collection  (or part of it) by Timeless Treasures. I got a Fat Quarter bundle at Craftsy , take advantage of those 50% off sales!!      Here are more of the blocks up close.      ...
