Hey everyone! Welcome to another Friday Night Block Party. I sure needed a block party this week, did anyone spike the punch? Just kidding!!
This week's featured block is not as easy as half-square triangles as they are paired up with Flying Geese blocks. When analyzing blocks you'll see how simple units yield a more complicated block. Watch those corners!!
According to The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt Book, which you'll be seeing more of on future posts, this block has 2 names (at least)!
Can you guess what it is?

Yep! It's called "Whirlpool." Below it's featured in only 2 colors.
It's also called Windblown Square which incorporates 3 colors.
The quilt blocks in this book have names pertaining to life on the farm so each block is a little peek into life back in those days and common day findings. I think that is so interesting. It's like if we were to name "modern" blocks things like, USB drive, or Biggy Fries or Twitter! That sounds like a challenge for next year's Friday Night Block Parties!
This block was also the first block on Fat Quarter Shop's BOM of 2012 featuring Bonnie and Camille's fabric line, Vintage Modern (shout if you love that line!) Woohoo!!
Here they are calling the block "Laundry Days" but the connotation of that name is something that keeps my from quilting, so..... I'll pass on that, thanks very much!
I did the three color version. I promised my friend I'd make her a Hanukkah Runner for her table.
(Support Israel, the chosen people of God!)
We finally narrowed it down to these great fabrics that highlight the colors from her Menorah.
I am doing three of the same block, with the same fabrics but in different parts of the block.
See here how the color placement changes the look of the block?
The runner is not yet done, but just about!! And I'm sorry I don't have a tutorial for this week's block. But you can look here for a downloadable pattern.
Here is another whirlpool block I found. This quilter made it to accompany a real letter from her ancestors and a real river they refer too. I got lost looking at her blog!
And if you are a reader and a quilter, she also features a read along (quilt novels) and then a block at the end of the month to represent the book. Yes, I got reeled in! The book for September is called The Goodbye Quilt.
REMINDER: HOW THIS PARTY WORKS:
This is supposed to be a no fuss link up. Just show us whatever block you are working on and tell us the name, if you don't know the name, someone else will, just link up! You can link to your flickr, Blog post or Pinterest? not sure about that one. We'd love to see your WIPs.
Thanks to the sponsors for some of the giveaways!
This month the giveaway is a Charms Pack from the Fat Quarter Shop! Please add your link or leave a comment to qualify. All links will stay open until October 3rd so everyone has ample time to link up, and then I'll announce the winner.
Please feel free to send me an email if there's something that would make linking up or joining the party easier for you.

What a fun block and post. I really love that idea of naming blocks from modern-day phrases next year. You're onto something! The blocks you made are very pretty and well done!
